WEEKLY AGGIE UPDATE - MAY 11, 2008 Utah State's outdoor track and field teams will travel to Boise, Idaho this week to compete in the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championships from Wednesday to Saturday, May 14-17. The multi-eventers will compete on Wednesday and Thursday, with the remainder of the track and field events set to begin Friday. The Aggie men will look to defend their WAC Championship from a year ago, while the Aggie women hope to improve on a fifth-place finish. Last week, USU competed in its final tune-up before next week's conference championships as it participated in the Utah Collegiate Challenge in Salt Lake City, winning seven events to go along with 30 top five finishes. USU came out with four victories on the women's side and three on the men's side, with the Aggie women and men notching 15 top five places apiece. For the Utah State women, junior Tara Pickett won the high jump with a personal-best 5-7 clearance, moving up to a tie for third on the WAC top 10 list, while classmate Vanessa Hawkins won the women's 3,000 meter run with a 10:30.85 time. Sophomore Erin Stratton joined the winning festivities in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:37.14, and freshman Sonia Grabowska tied for first in the pole vault with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 12-7.50. On the men's side, junior Blake Hadfield won the men's long jump with a 23-7.50 distance, while freshman Joe Canavan won the shot put with a 51-6.25 mark. The Aggie men's 4x100 meter relay team made up of seniors Dasheek Akwenye and Lamar Brown, junior John Strang and freshman Silas Pimentel broke the tape in 41.51. Other women's highlights included junior Krista Larson logging a pair of personal bests, finishing second in the hammer throw with a 187-7 distance and third in the discus with a mark of 150-3. Larson's hammer throw mark moves her up to second on the WAC best list and is the fifth-best mark in USU history. Her discus distance ties her for ninth on the conference season list and is the 10th-best in Aggie history. The USU men posted a 3-4-5 finish in the 200 meter dash with junior Keith Williams placing third in 22.36, while junior Brandon Waller was fourth with a 22.43 and senior Brett Knighton was fifth at 22.46. Utah State also had one individual compete in the Oregon Twilight Meet in senior Stacie Dorius, who finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying time of 10:21.11. SOFTBALL Contact: Ashley McWilliams - (435) 797-1361 Utah State's softball team (14-34, 2-15) ended its 2008 season last weekend with an 8-2 loss to San Jose State and a 3-0 loss to New Mexico State at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Against the Spartans, senior catcher Heather Haak had two hits and one RBI, while sophomore center fielder Emily Reilly had two hits and scored one run. Freshman shortstop Kelley Kaneshiro scored the Aggies other run in the game. SJSU scored one run in the first and another in the third. USU scored its first run in the top of the third, but the Spartans answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, followed by four more in the sixth to put the game away. The Aggies final run of the game came in the top of the seventh. Against NMSU, junior left fielder Mikey Price was the only Aggie to get a hit in the game as USU had a total of just three base runners. The southern Aggies scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to notch the win. Utah State finishes the season by hitting .264, while its opponents hit .325. USU also had a team ERA of 5.14 on the year, while its opponents ERA was 3.53. |
